In 2010 startte hij met exposeren en in 2014 kreeg hij de Preis der Kunsthalle Wien. In een gevonden rondom beglaasde ruimte (aan de openbare weg) bouwde hij daarvoor The Fog Disperses, een (figuratieve) installatie met een auto en een tentje, aangevuld met attributen die een kampeerder zoal meezeult. Alhoewel er niemand in de installatie is, is er wel de indringende aanwezigheid van sporen. Van wie zouden die tent en auto zijn en wie is wie? Het geheel biedt tegelijk een vrolijke en een mistroostige aanblik. Met deze tot in het detail uitgewerkte installatie ontspint zich een spanning tussen de door glas geïsoleerde informele kampeerplek en de omringende openbare ruimte. De titel laat ons onbewust vragen stellen over een versluierd en ondoorzichtig maatschappijbestel. Elke toeschouwer leest het werk, vanuit zijn eigen connotaties, op een andere manier. The Fog Disperses lijkt een sleutelwerk te worden in het oeuvre van Leander Schönweger. Deze sitespecifieke installatie geeft, zo blijkt, aanleiding tot vele andere in-situwerken, waarbij de tegenstelling tussen binnen en buiten steeds op een andere manier onderzocht wordt. Een kooi of bokaal maakt (visueel) contact mogelijk ondanks een materiële barrière; een doos heeft een andere relatie met binnen en buiten maar draagt wel, zoals een kooi of een bokaal, uitgebreide en diverse visuele en metafysische (artistieke) potenties in zich. Als kooien, bokalen en dozen groot zijn worden het menselijk toegankelijke ruimte(s). Ze maken controle en manipulatie van de belangstellende mogelijk. Naarmate het werk van Schönweger vordert, worden de installaties abstracter en concentreren ze zich tegelijkertijd (nog) meer op het opwekken van psychische reacties en elementair en naïef gedrag, zoals bijvoorbeeld claustrofobie, verwachting, ontgoocheling en andere ervaringen die we als kind al sterk ervoeren… Alhoewel het zwaartepunt ligt bij installaties, wordt het thema “kooi” sinds 2019 ook vertaald in klein sculpturaal werk, meer in het bijzonder in de series of cages. Something Steers Us Both, in 2019 gemaakt voor de tentoonstelling Open Skies bij het kunstencentrum Wiels te Brussel, is op verschillende manieren architectonisch te interpreteren. Dat valt direct te merken aan de manier om het werk in de ruimte te plaatsen. De spanning tussen de doos en de toegewezen ruimte is architectonisch intrigerend. De tussenruimte tussen doos en kamer is een volwaardige ruimte die fungeert als antichambre vooraleer men het labyrint in de constructie betreedt. Binnen creëert Schönweger vooral een beklijvend droombeeld. Het interieur lijkt eerder een hol waarvan de wanden volgestapeld zijn met wat mijn ouders “Mechelse meubelen” noemden – of zijn het misschien schatten op zolder? Echter, Schönweger heeft duidelijk geen architecturale besognes; het interieur hoeft niet op menselijke maat gedacht en gemaakt te worden. Toen ik hem dat zei, wees Leander mij op de installatie Our Family Lost, die hij bouwde voor de Biënnale van Istanbul 2017, bestaande uit wanden van gipskarton met plinten onderaan en openingen omkaderd door deurlijsten. Deze bouwkundige en bouwkunstige elementen worden enkel functioneel en pragmatisch gebruikt om de bezoeker een angstdroom te laten ondergaan in een claustrofobische doolhof waarin men langs steeds kleiner wordende openingen in steeds kleinere ruimtes belandt en alle ruimtelijk besef kan verliezen. Om deze ervaring nog te verhevigen zijn er achter de wanden onzichtbare mechanische hamertjes aangebracht die op de wanden kloppen. Leander Schönweger bouwt zijn installaties rudimentair en naarmate ze abstracter worden, worden ze volgens mij sterker, directer en psychisch en metafysisch ingrijpender. In een vervreemde sfeer heerst dialectiek: verwachting en ontgoocheling, opluchting en claustrofobie, binnen en buiten, object en subject, ruimte en sculptuur. Herkenbare objecten of geluiden worden soms minimaal ingezet voor hun effect in het ruimtelijk geheel. De installatie The Submarine, die in 2021 werd gerealiseerd in Amilly (Frankrijk), bestaat uit een plafond en wanden van OSB-platen verlicht door fluorescentiebuizen in functionele lichtarmaturen. Alles is hier zeer strak gebouwd, waardoor de ruimte sterk aanwezig is. Aan het einde van twee doodlopende ruimtes bevindt zich een spoeltafel waarin wat eetgerei ligt dat rammelt door een mechanisch opgewekte vibratie. Getting Better, voor U bij Lichtekooi gebouwd, bouwt consistent verder aan het oeuvre. Men komt binnen langs een smalle gang die gevormd wordt door een kist. Eens binnen in de tentoonstellingsruimte beseft men dat vooraan enkel een kist staat; de rest is leeg. Vervolgens ontdekt men dat de kist toegankelijk is. Een gang leidt naar een andere opening, men maakt een U-turn en gaat langs een trap naar beneden. Daar komt men in een labyrint dat opmerkelijk uitgebreider is dan gedacht. Links van de trap is een opening en zo komt men in een enge gang die links eindigt op een lege nis en langs rechts naar een opening leidt waarlangs men weer met een U-turn in een lange smalle gang komt waar aan het einde het werk zich in al zijn glorie openbaart. Aan de hand van fictie, materiële symboliek en moonshine worden kapitalistische ideeën over productiviteit, zelfbeheersing en uitgestelde bevrediging in vraag gesteld. In plaats van de overtuiging aan een vast object te koppelen, worden de bezoekers uitgenodigd om tijd te ervaren als gelaagd, collectief, queer, cyclisch, gesedimenteerd en open. ENYemo Park (°1990, Seoul, lives and works in Brussels) develops her artistic practice through self-contained, often absurd, fictional business concepts. Rather than aiming for market success, these projects function as conceptual frameworks that explore artistic autonomy, labor, the human condition, and the social forces shaping everyday life. In Wollamhsram, Park extends this approach by transforming Lichtekooi into a fictional house of worship centered on the desire to “enjoy time”. Through fiction, material symbolism, and moonshine, the project opens a space for questioning capitalist notions of productivity, self-control, and deferred gratification. Voor meer info: contact@lichtekooi.be *** Het nieuwe jaar start voor Lichtekooi Artspace in mineur. Onze subsidieaanvraag voor de jaarwerking 2026 werd positief beoordeeld, maar viel buiten budget. Dit betekent dat we geen middelen ontvangen om ons programma uit te voeren of ons team te vergoeden. Voor een kleine organisatie als Lichtekooi is dit een rechtstreekse crisis en kan dit de doodsteek betekenen. Opgericht in 2020, groeiden organisatie, team en programma in vijf jaar gestaag, gedragen door kunstenaars, publiek en herhaalde aanmoediging vanuit het beleid. Lichtekooi is een platform voor artistiek experiment, onderzoek en kritische reflectie buiten dominante structuren. We ondersteunen kunstenaars in het ontwikkelen van nieuwe praktijken en stemmen die het culturele landschap verrijken en bevragen. Lichtekooi streeft ernaar om volgens de regels van fair practice en fair pay een unieke en waardevolle positie binnen het Vlaamse culturele landschap in te nemen, een positie die vandaag ernstig bedreigd wordt. De projectsubsidie van de Vlaamse overheid is momenteel het enige instrument waarmee organisaties een jaarwerking kunnen ontwikkelen en kunnen doorgroeien naar een structurele ondersteuning – een traject dat Lichtekooi expliciet werd aangemoedigd te volgen. Op dit moment ontbreekt een tussenoptie van één of twee jaar als opstap naar structurele ondersteuning, waardoor een situatie als deze kan ontstaan. Dit kan leiden tot een verhard en rigide cultureel landschap, waarin weinig ruimte overblijft voor risico, onderzoek en nieuwe stemmen. We dienen een nieuwe subsidieaanvraag in voor de 2e helft van het jaar en doen intussen alles wat binnen onze mogelijkheden ligt om, ondanks deze enorme beperking, de eerste geplande tentoonstelling van het seizoen – van Yemo Park – toch te laten doorgaan.
